Garage Golf: Tips For Planning Your Space

Can You Play Golf In Your Garage?

Setting up an indoor golf simulator studio in your garage is a great option when you don’t have the ideal space in your home for a proper setup. Many are converting one stall, or even entire garages into fully functional spaces to play and practice.

In fact, that’s exactly what I did in my own personal setup. In this guide, I will share with you what I learned when building my own garage golf simulator, and some of my favorite products.

Do You Have Enough Space?

Conventional advice for setting up a a golf simulator is to follow the 10/15/20 rule. If you have 10 ft of height, 15 feet of width, and 20 feet of depth you have an ideal space to create a comfortable golf space that is immersive for both left and right handed players.

However, many garage golf simulators are installed with less than ideal dimensions, and work perfectly fine! In my own personal garage golf simulator, I converted the third stall of my three car garage.

My dimensions are approximately 10 feet of ceiling height, 13 feet of swing (width) space, and about 17 feet deep.

Budget Vs Professional

Depending on your budget, garage golf simulators can range in cost. The cheapest garage golf practice spaces using a net and a hitting mat can be setup for a few hundred dollars, while high end garage golf studios can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Many golfers, myself included, will start with an entry level setup and graudate from there.

As a good friend of mine told me when I was first starting the process of playing golf in my garage, “welcome to your new hobby”.

I didn’t think much of his statement at the time, but after months of tinkering with various setups, accessories, and products, I quickly understood that we are never truly “done” setting up our garage golf studio!

Can You Still Park Your Car With A Garage Golf Simulator?

It depends. In my own personal garage golf setup, I can still park two cars in the garage while playing. Some people will have to be more creative, and setup multi-functional spaces.

The good news is the garage golf market is innovative and there is almost always a solution that will work for you! We even partner with brands that sell retractable garage golf simulators and fold away golf simulators.

What About Temperature And Humidity Control?

Depending on where you live, controlling the temperature and humidity levels in your garage golf space can be an important planning factor. Do you need heat, air conditioning, or a dehumidifier to ensure the safety and longevitiy of your launch monitor, gaming PC, and projector?

The answer will largely depend on where your space is located, if it’s insulated, and whether you have proper mechanices in your space to accomodate your needs.
